About the Department

The Department of Performing Arts started functioning from the academic year 1988-89 and it offers M.P.A. in Drama &Theatre Arts and Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre Arts and PGDTA – Postgraduate Diploma in Theatre Arts (Add-on course offered in the evening). The Department aims to develop the best research practices under the ‘Performance Tradition’ internationally with different modes of presentations, various techniques, styles and systems employed in the form of creative communications as part of the syllabus. It also intends to provide more insights on Cultural Heritage of India, by guiding and grading to make the students realize that they are the inheritors of the glorious past cultural history of India.Since the Art of Theatre is a product of Scientific and Artistic creation, the courses are structured in such a way so as to impart the students a clear interdisciplinary approach, encompassing all aspects of human life and also to explore all the possibilities of performance and translate the same through the stage and other medium. It also provides a platform to the students to learn more about the glorious history of the Performing Arts and other related disciplines in order to enhance the creative skills like Acting, Direction, Theatre Techniques and Design, Applied Theatre, Community Theatre and inter-disciplinary play productions.

I have joined in Department of Performing Arts, Pondicherry Central University in 2007 as Assistant Professor and started exploring the subject of Actor, Training and Acting through Play productions, workshops, Seminars , guiding PhD research scholar and projects. Basically I am a trained theatre artist from the well known Theatre Trust ” Koothu-P-Pattarai” (Chennai) having professional experience of 15 years including acting in 30 play productions, conducted actor training programmes, Corporate theatre workshops and involved in Street Theatre Projects. Learnt the skills of various Art forms like; Yoga, Tai-Chi-Chuan, Kalaripayattu, Silambam, Tang-Ta, Devarattam and Therukuthu . Having working experiences with Regional , National and International Theatre Experts.

Since its inception, the Department of Performing Arts has created infra-structure in terms of providing Departmental Library exclusively meant for books on Performing and Fine Arts, Computer and Internet facilities, Studio Theatre, Fully equipped with Audio-Video systems, for the benefit of the students and scholars. In addition, the Department of Performing Arts has its own Three Studio- Theatres A/C well equipped with Lighting and Sound System. Studio Theatre meant for the Stage Rehearsals and Performance, T.V and Film Production and Movement classes and Seminar Purpose.An Open-Air Theatre for multiple purposes. Networks and Doordharsan Channels, Schools, Colleges, Theme Resorts and the Department of National and International Universities.Through out the years, the School has established a national reputation as a Centre where young people successfully attain talents and skills for careers in theatre and its related arts, live and documented productions, advertisement and motion picture in relation to the requirements of the cultural institutions.

After completion of the course, the student can work in the avenues like Schools and Colleges as Drama Teachers and Cultural Co-coordinators / Trainers. They can get job opportunities in the Government Departments like Song and Drama Division, South Zone Cultural Centre, Government Developmental Projects, Social Awareness Projects, N.G.Os, in national and international reputed universities, colleges and schools, Theatre-Repertories and also in the field of Acting, Direction and as Designers in the Government and Private Satellite T.V. and Film industry. The passed outs candidates can also pursue their research or practice independently in the field of Performing Arts and related subjects as theatre professionals.During the last 32 years, the School has established national reputation as a center where young people successfully attain talents and skills for careers in theatre and theatre related arts, live and documentary productions, advertisement and motion pictures in relation to the requirements of the cultural institutions/organizations. Developing different strategies in the importance of Theatre in Education and community empowerment, creating awareness among the social concerns, the significance of new technologies and challenges with new media in performance practices, providing probabilities to do cross cultural performance and media practices. The department also concentrates on the study of the history of Tamil Theatre through ancient Tamil Literature, inscription and sculpture configuration of Modern Theatre Arts from traditional arts and conducting interdisciplinary research related to Performing Arts.
MoU has been signed with IGNCA (Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts), New Delhi. Another MoU has been signed with JIPMER and School of Performing Arts and Puduvai Vaani, Community Radio Station of Pondicherry UniversityThe students of the School of Performing Arts staging 20-25 plays every year. Students also actively participate in documentary films, play productions, film acting etc in and outside the university. Recently the students and faculty acted in a Tamil feature film “Baaram” (Burden), which was given one of the best Tamil film awards in Goa International Film Festival in 2018 and also nominated to UNESCO Gandhi Award 2019. Students of the School of Performing Arts are bringing out an online monthly magazine called THEATRON since 2018 covering all the professional works done by the students and research scholars in and outside the university. Every year students and research scholars as part their curriculum participate in national and international theatre and film festivals. The School of Performing Arts conducts many workshops by international experts and also arranged seminars to meet the needs of the students and research scholars.
