About the Department
The Department of Sociology celebrates Silver Jubilee year of its existence since January 1993. The students were admitted to M.A and Ph.D programmes from 1993-94 academic year and the M.Phil programme was introduced from 1996-97. The Post-Graduate Diploma in Rural Development was launched from 2009-10. In the span of over two and half decades, the Department has trained a fairly large number of talented Post-graduate students drawn from different parts of the country. From its inception the Department has focused on understanding the complexities of modern social life through the application of advanced sociological theories and methods within an interdisciplinary framework building upon the traditions of the discipline. The students are encouraged to acquire critical reading, theoretical insights and research skills through rigorous training. The research areas undertaken by students and faculty members cover wide range of issues of public concern like the effects of economic development on society and culture, problems of weaker sections, gender and society, disaster management, environmental issues, social movements, minority studies, etc.
The Department equips students for a variety of careers including but not limited to: academics, civil services, activism and advocacy. The alumni are employed in reputed governmental as well as corporate organizations in India and abroad.
About Head
Professor
B B Mohanty is currently a Professor at Department of Sociology. After obtaining Ph. D from Sambalpur University, Odisha, he worked for a brief period in undergraduate colleges of Odisha. Subsequently he moved to Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune where he served as a lecturer and then Reader. He joined Pondicherry University as a Professor in 2006. His recent books include Agrarian Change and Mobilisation (Sage), Critical Perspectives in Agrarian Transition: India in the Global Debate (Routledge), and Agrarian Transformation in Western India: Economic Gains and Social Costs (Routledge). Currently he is the Managing Editor of Sociological Bulletin.
