About the Department
The Department of Tourism Studies (DTS) is one of the first university-based departments to introduce Master of Tourism Administration in 1991. This Department offers two-year full-time MBA (TTM) program and research program leading to the award of Ph.D. degree. The sole objective is to prepare young graduates and research scholars professionally equipped with specialized knowledge and skills to lead tourism and allied areas of businesses and carry out cutting-edge research studies. The Department maintains close rapport with its alumni for lucrative placements and collaboration in academic activities. The Department has been maintaining an impeccable and impressive track record of placements. DTS is the only Tourism Department in the country funded by the UGC with its Special Assistance Program (SAP) at DRS Level –II from the academic year 2015-16. Apart from the regular curriculum, students are exposed to participate in the extracurricular and co-curricular activities. With the active support of alumni, industry and the University, the Department has been striving tirelessly to emerge as a Centre of Excellence in tourism management education, consultancy and research. The Department is a member of Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) and South Indian Hotels and Restaurants Association (SIHRA).
Prof. Sampada Kumar Swain , working as Head, Department of Tourism Studies, has obtained all his degrees (Graduation, PG, Ph.D. & D.Litt.) from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. He served in RCM, Bhubaneswar prior to joining Pondicherry University in 2004 as a lecturer. He was on deputation to IGNTU, Amarkantak, MP as Professor from 2012 to 2018. He published three dozen research papers, two edited books, and one reference book. Prof. Swain has co-authored a book titled “Tourism Principles and Practices, published by OUP. His areas of research interest include: Sustainable Tourism, Ecotourism, Responsible Tourism, Community-based Tourism, Destination Image and Social Tourism.
