M. A. Political Science

The PG programme in Political Science gives an opportunity to talented graduates to get comprehensively trained in all aspect of the most sought after social science discipline. This programme introduces the students to the idea of political theory, its history and approaches, and an assessment of its critical and contemporary trends. Further, the programme is designed to reconcile political theory and practice through reflections on the ideas and practices related to democracy. The course seeks to equip students with the essential intellectual tools for understanding Political Theory, The working of Indian Constitution, Party System in India, Public Policy and administration as also theory and practice of International Relations. The essence of the public policy lies in its effectiveness in translating the governing philosophy into programmes and policies and making it a part of the community living. It deals with issues of decentralization, financial management, citizens and administration and social welfare from a non-western perspective. The programme also introduces the specific elements of Indian Political Thought spanning over two millennia. The primary focus of the study is on individual thinkers whose ideas are however framed by specific themes. The course as a whole is meant to provide a sense of the broad streams of Political Science. The overall objective of the programme is to offer comprehensive training to students to seek employment through competitive examinations in the administrative system of India at the national, state and local levels

Debates in Political Theory

This course seeks to introduce the students to major approaches in theorizing political life and to the major concepts in the discourse of politics. The course tries to make the students understand how the social and power relations are theorized by various theoretical projects.

Themes in Indian Political Thought

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the richness and variety of Indian Political Thought, a tradition that spans centuries if not millennia, culminating in the various present day understandings of Indian society. Course Learning Outcomes: The course will provide students a preliminary grasp over some critical issues animating Indian political thought today and acquaint them with some key debates within this tradition.

Comkparative Political Analysis

This course deals with the theoretical approaches to the study of Comparative Politics and the paper also intends to highlight on variations in systematic characteristics and processes, to equip us with a sound grasp of methodology of comparison and to enable us to understand alternative theoretical models and explanations. It analyzes in a comparative way, a fundamental grasp over the various theories and explanations regarding political development in the Third World countries. The paper concentrates specifically on some of the major paradigms or world views, which have elicited different theories of development, underdevelopment in the study of Comparative Politics.

Issues in Indian Politics

This course focuses on political institutions and processes in India to expose the students to the ways of studying state and politics in India. The course identifies themes which have become significant in the study of Indian politics and explores the processes through which they acquired salience. It places these themes in historical, social and economic contexts, as well as the institutional frameworks within which they take specific forms. The manner in which institutions are constituted and function in relationship with each other and in the context of the wider social and political processes are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the complex ways in which politics in India takes institutional forms and unfolds through diverse processes.

Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with at least 50% marks or Equivalent Grade. UG level Political Science, Indian Polity, General Know ledge and General English
